How to Help an Older Dog Into the Car
Measure one height, pick stairs or a ramp to match it, and give your dog a week to trust it.

Start with one number: the height from the ground to the spot your dog will step onto (the back seat edge, or the cargo floor of an SUV with the hatch open). A sedan seat is usually around 20 inches, an SUV cargo floor 28 to 32 inches, and a truck bed higher still. Under about 20 inches, short folding stairs with deep treads tend to work well and fit through a car door. Above that, a ramp is easier on stiff hips: plan on roughly 2.5 to 3 inches of ramp length for every inch of height, so a 28 inch cargo floor wants a ramp of 70 inches or longer, with a deck wide enough for all four feet and a grippy surface. Check the weight rating is well above your dog's weight, and that the folded size actually fits your trunk. Then train it at home before the first trip: lay the ramp flat on the floor, reward every step on it, raise it a little each day, and only then try it at the car with the engine off. Most dogs refuse a ramp because it moves or feels narrow, not because of the height, so brace it firmly against the car and keep the leash short and slow. Lifting is fine as a backup for small dogs, but support the chest and the rear together rather than pulling under the belly.
The short version
Low car and a mostly steady dog: short folding stairs. SUV, truck, or a dog with weak back legs: a long, wide ramp, trained flat on the floor first. Our dog ramp picks list length, width and weight rating for each.
